Do you know why different liquids are packaged in different materials?-@Glass

August 08, 2023

Different liquids have different requirements for packaging materials, and the use of suitable packaging materials can better protect the quality of the product. For example, wine products usually need to be protected from light and oxidation. As a glass bottle manufacturer, we usually use opaque glass bottles to block the entry of light and oxygen. Juice fizzy drinks often need to be kept fresh and leak-proof, so airtight and durable packaging is often used. Tea is usually packaged in paper bags to keep the freshness and taste of the tea. Through market research, it is found that in terms of the market share of packaging materials, glass bottles account for about 30%, PET accounts for 30%, metal accounts for nearly 30%, and paper packaging accounts for about 10%.

1. Glass packaging

Now everyone is gradually pursuing environmental protection. It can be seen that the use of glass is the most, and it is also the packaging material with the longest history. Everyone should have the impression that in the 1980s and 1990s, the soda, beer, and champagne we drank were all bottled in glass bottles. Even now, glass still plays an important role in the packaging industry.

The glass used to hold alcoholic beverages is usually lead-free glass, high borosilicate glass, etc., which are non-toxic and tasteless, and look transparent, allowing people to see the contents clearly at a glance, giving people a sense of beauty. a feeling of. Moreover, it has good barrier properties and is airtight, so you don’t have to worry about spilling or bugs getting in after a long time. It can be cleaned and disinfected for repeated use. It is not afraid of heat or high pressure. It has thousands of advantages in one, so it is called Many food merchants use it to hold beverages. Especially not afraid of high pressure, it is very suitable for containing carbonated beverages, such as beer, soda, fruit juice, etc.

But glass packaging containers also have some disadvantages. The main problem is that it is heavy and easily damaged.

2. Metal

In the 1980s, metal packaging began to take the stage. The emergence of metal canned beverages has improved people's living standards. At present, metal cans are divided into two-piece cans and three-piece cans. The material used for the three-piece can is mostly tin-plated steel sheet (tinplate), and the material for the two-piece can is mostly aluminum alloy sheet. Because aluminum cans have better sealing and ductility, and are also suitable for filling at low temperatures, they are more suitable for beverages that produce gas, such as carbonated beverages and beer.

At present, aluminum cans are more widely used than iron cans in the market. Among the canned drinks you can see, almost all of them are packaged in aluminum cans. However, representative herbal tea beverages in the Guangdong market, such as Wanglaoji, Chunhetang, Denglao herbal tea, etc., are packaged in tinplate cans, which are more solid. It is not easy to break, easy to carry, not afraid of high temperature and high pressure and changes in air humidity, and is not afraid of the erosion of harmful substances. It has excellent barrier properties, light and gas barriers, can prevent air from entering to produce oxidation reactions, and keep drinks for a longer period of time. Moreover, the surface of the metal can is convenient for secondary processing, and various patterns and colors can be drawn. Therefore, most of the beverages in metal cans are colorful and have rich patterns. Finally, metal cans are convenient for recycling and are more friendly to the environment.

However, metal packaging containers also have their disadvantages. Its chemical stability is not as good as that of glass, and it is more afraid of acids and alkalis. Too high acidity or too strong alkalinity will slowly corrode the metal. On the other hand, if the inner coating quality of the metal packaging is poor or the workmanship is not up to standard, it will make the drink taste bad, and even have a bad impact on the body.

3. Paper packaging

Early paper packaging generally uses high-strength raw cardboard. However, pure paper packaging materials are difficult to use in beverages, and almost all paper packaging materials used today are composite materials of paper.

The PE film or aluminum foil in the composite paper material can avoid light and air, and will not affect the taste, so it is more suitable for short-term preservation of fresh milk, yogurt and long-term preservation of dairy drinks, tea drinks, fruit juices and other beverages. The shape is Tetra Pillow, aseptic square brick, etc.

But there are also disadvantages. For example, the pressure resistance and sealing barrier of paper-plastic composite containers are not as good as glass bottles, metal cans and plastic containers, and they cannot be heat-sterilized. And reduce its heat sealing performance, or become uneven due to reasons such as creases, causing the problem of difficult feeding of filling machines.
